Hogwarts Legacy: The Stain on Harry Potter’s Legacy
The much-anticipated Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy has been released this week. The game’s aim is to give Harry Potter fans a true Hogwarts feel. We’ve always wanted a Harry Potter video game that allows you to customize your character, get sorted and attend classes.
The series provided comfort to many millennials. The books’ characters faced challenges that are similar to those many young people experience, including bullying, navigating relationships and dealing with losses. Many people felt less alone when they read the books. They gained a sense belonging and validation. Harry Potter is a favorite of mine. I have a tattoo that is an ode of my favorite book series.
When I first heard of the game, I couldn’t wait to finally explore the world that I had seen on the pages and screens.
It is no surprise that the game has been met with controversy due to J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans stance. I’m sure the developers didn’t expect that the creator would be their biggest obstacle when the game was released.
The author has been using her platform in recent years to spread antitrans hatred by misgendering and supporting antitrans policies and politics. I was shocked by the author’s disrespect for the transgender community. J.K. Rowling’s series was about respecting differences and others, but she didn’t follow her own advice.
The devs seem to be trying to differentiate themselves from Rowling with a variety of character customizations. We also see that NPCs are inclusive. Even though they introduced a trans person who runs The Three Broomsticks in the game, is that enough?
Fans are torn between buying the game out of love for the series and protecting a community who fights daily to be themselves. We did not expect that the author of the series would be more Voldemort-like than Harry.
Can you tell the difference between art and artist in the world of the cancel culture?
